What is a Food Forest?

Food Forests are Edible Forest Gardens that mimic forest systems and provide food for humans and wildlife. They often serve regenerative conservation sites and as homes for native plants and wildlife.

The 7+ Layers of a Food Forest

Food forests are often comprised of companion plants of different sizes and root systems that are planted close together in a symbiotic way and often with the following layers in mind:
  1. 🌲 Canopy Layer
  2. 🌳 Understory Layer
  3. 🌵 Shrub Layer
  4. 🥦 Herbaceous Layer
  5. ☘️ Groundcover Layer
  6. 🥕 Root Layer
  7. 🍇 Vine Layer
  8. 🍄 Fungal Layer

Multi-Purpose Plants

We’re not sure yet exactly and this website is new and still under development. Our first goal is to list as many events, workshops, PDCs, and other courses as we can.

What is Food Forest School?
(honestly, we're slowly figuring it out)

Connecting Instructors, Students, & Enthusiasts

The main purpose of FoodForestSchool.com is to connect people interested in food forests with people who have the experience with the skills required to grow them.

Listings for Courses, Events, & Workshops

Our first goal is to list as many events, workshops, PDCs, and other courses as possible in our local Pacific Northwest region that are related or have something in common with Food Forests.

We then intend to expand that to a national and eventually international level.

Somewhere along the line, we would like to invite instructors, and institutions to list their courses here and process payments for them.

Free Online Courses & Information

We’ll slowly be adding detailed information on this site aimed at teaching future food foresters the skills they need to plan and grow successful food forests for their unique situation and unique location.

Free Resources & Information

We’ll be adding a variety of different reference material, guides, peer-reviewed links, and other information in an organized and easily accessible manner.
